Congress is beginning debate on a very important piece of legislation that would make the workplace fairer for us all.
By making sure employees are evaluated on the quality of their work, rather than personal characteristics like sexual orientation and gender identity, ENDA honors the principle of the Golden Rule, that we should always treat others as we would like to be treated.
Clergy are often looked to to provide moral leadership in heated debates. Right now, we need our leaders speak up for the Golden Rule and for workplace fairness. Can you sign the faith leader letter at http://goldenruleatwork.org?
Below are some key points of information about ENDA:
- Creates a level playing field by ensuring employees are judged solely on job performance, not personal characteristics and allowing gay and lesbian Americans to join the traditional workplace and follow the same rules as all other employees.
- Honors core religious values like treating others as we would want to be treated (the Golden Rule) and protecting the human dignity of every person.
- Protects religious freedom the bill follows the same guidelines as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Ensuring that places of worship and religious organizations on all sides of the issue can still carry out their values.
